Marlene Kanga – WEC 2019 Chair/ President-Elect WFEO


Dr. Marlene Kanga is Chair of WEC 2019. She is WFEO President-Elect, 2017 – 2019 and a member of the WFEO Executive Council and was National President of Engineers Australia in 2013.

Dr Marlene Kanga is one of Australian’s leading engineers. She is a non-executive director of Sydney Water Corporation, Australia’s largest utility, serving Greater Sydney, with 2015 revenues of $2.7 billion. She is Chair of the Department of Industry and Science R&D Incentives Committee, the largest support program, at $2.5 billion, for industry based research and development in Australia. She is a board member and was Acting Chair in 2014-15, of Innovation Australia which has oversight over the Department of Industry and Science programs to support entrepreneurial development, commercialisation of research and venture capital investments. She is a Director of iOmniscient Pty Ltd which has developed patented software technology for intelligent video analytics systems and is an international leader in this field.

In addition to her role at WFEO and Chair of WEC 2019, is Vice-President of the International Network for Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES), leading strategies for greater diversity in engineering and science.

Marlene is a chemical engineer with extensive experience in the oil, gas, chemical and related industries with respect to risk and safety engineering. Marlene is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia, a Fellow of the Academy of Technology Science and Engineering and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

She was the FEIAP (Federation of Engineering Institutions in Asia and the Pacific) Professional Engineer of the Year in 2014 and listed among the Top 100 Engineers in Australia in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and the Top 100 Westpac Women of Influence in 2013. She received an Australian national recognition in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 2014 for her contributions to engineering and as a role model.
